The Senate Finance Committee heard testimony from U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills on the recently completed North American Free Trade Agreement. Issues brought up in the hearing included the agreement’s possible effects on the U.S. economy, U.S. employment and labor, and the environment in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Opponents of the free trade agreement claim the agreement would allow American companies to escape fair wage, labor and environmental regulations in the U.S. by moving their factories to Mexico. Ms. Hills defended the agreements' provisions concerning labor and environmental regulations. close
