The House Subcommittee on Aviation heard testimony about the security of the air space around Washington, DC and the Capitol due to the confusion on June 9 when Kentucky governor Ernie Fletcher’s small plane flew into the DC airspace while its transponder was not working correctly. The incident caused the U.S. Capitol and surrounding buildings to be evacuated as a precaution. Linda Schuessler, Senior Operations VP at the Federal Aviation Administration and Jonathan Fleming, Chief Operating Officer at the Transportation Security Administration discussed the incident, described how the decision to evacuate was made, and answered questions about jurisdiction and communication problems. close
