Panelists talked about trade agreements and presidential authority to fast track agreements. This trade promotion authority for a president to negotiate international agreements free of congressional amendments or filibuster expired in 2007 and the panelists discussed the prospects of Congress renewing this power. Both speakers highlighted the negative effects on U.S. trade of past fast track trade authority agreements like the WTO and NAFTA as they considered the current negotiations involving the Trans-Pacific Partnership. They also considered constitutional implications.

“Do We Need Fast Track/Trade Promotion Authority?” was held by Economy in Crisis at the National Press Club. close
