Samuel Fleischacker and Russell Roberts talked about The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith. Topics included his historic importance in the social sciences and impact of his work. Adam Smith (1723-1790), a philosopher and economist, published Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations in 1776. “The invisible hand of the market,” the term economists use to describe the self-regulating nature of the marketplace, is a metaphor first used by Adam Smith in The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759).

Samuel Fleischacker is a philosophy professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of several books, including A Third Concept of Liberty: Judgment and Freedom in Kant and Adam Smith and On Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations: A Political Companion.
