Commissioner Scott Gottlieb testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on the President Trump’s fiscal year 2018 Food and Drug Administration budget request. The budget proposes cutting FDA’s discretionary budget authority by $854 million while doubling user fees collected from companies that produce certain drug and biological products to make up the difference. The commissioner also announced the formation of a special team to clear out the backlog of “orphan drug requests,” which are requests made by a sponsor for drugs that treat rare diseases. close
