Renee Redman talked about the history of Asylum Law in the United States. She argued that prior to the Refugee Act of 1980, the application process for asylum or refugee status was based on foreign policy rather than internationally accepted humanitarian criteria, which limited those who qualified for protected status prior to the reform.

“A Short History of United States Asylum Law” was part of a two-day symposium hosted by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society titled “Congress and a Nation of Immigrants, 1790-1990: From the First Naturalization Act to the Simpson-Mazzoli Act.” This was held in the Russell Senate Office Building. close
