Mark Zwonitzer talked about his book, The Statesman and the Storyteller: John Hay, Mark Twain, and the Rise of American Imperialism, about the friendship between author Mark Twain and former Secretary of State John Hay, who served under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. In his book, the author reports on Twain and Hay’s divergent views on American foreign policy at a time when the United States had annexed Hawaii and went to war to control Puerto Rico, Guam, Cuba, and the Philippines. close
