      <title>Gubernatorial Reaction to White House Meeting</title>
      <description>Following their meeting with the president and vice president, several state governors spoke to reporters outside the White House about the impact of the sequestration cuts on their states. Several of them urged Congress and the president to reach a compromise.
The governors were in Washington, D.C., to attend the National Governors Association (NGA) 2013 Winter Meeting, an annual meeting in which a bipartisan group of U.S. governors gathers in Washington, D.C. to discuss issues affecting the states. 
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget taken back in order to cut deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.</description>

Governor Malloy said sequestration would be very bad for his state if it took effect. He also criticized Republicans in Congress, saying they were doing everything possible to negatively impact the economic recovery.

In opening remarks, he remembered the victims of the Newtown elementary school shooting and honored several officials from that city. He advocated the need for creating safer communities, saying more guns was not the answer. Other topics included Connecticut's economy and budget, energy security, and response to Hurricane Sandy and winter storms. He said the federal government not providing storm aid was unacceptable.</description>

      <title>President Obama at Newtown, Connecticut Prayer Vigil</title>
      <description>President Obama spoke at an interfaith vigil for families of the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The shooting claimed 26 victims, including 20 children aged six and seven. In his remarks to local citizens at Sandy Point High School, President Obama read aloud the names of the victims, called on the nation to do more to prevent gun violence, and pledged the full power of the presidency in addressing the issue. During portions of the remarks muffled reaction from families in the auditorium could be heard.</description>

Former Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin talked about the central role cities play in the U.S. economy as well as the current precarious economic situation. Following the talk he answered questions from members of the audience. Stamford Mayor Dannell Malloy, a trustee of the United States Conference of Mayors, reported on "Saving for the Future: Celebrating 30 Years of Deferred Compensation." John Zogby released a "National Opinion Poll on Key '08 Metropolitan Priorities."
 
 The annual winter meeting was held at the Capital Hilton Hotel.</description>
