Book Discussion on [Peace Be upon You]

Zachary Karabell talked about his book [Peace Be upon You: The Story of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Coexistence], published by Knopf. Mr. Karabell traces the historical instances of peaceful coexistence between Muslim, Christian, and Jewish people. The author contended that throughout the past fourteen centuries the different faiths have found common ground; from peaceful debate amongst scholars in the courts of the caliphs in Baghdad to medieval Spain where Jewish sages, Muslim philosophers, and Christian monks translated the meaning of God together. The author argued that the current state of religious tensions are solvable if one studies the past. Mr. Karabell responded to questions from the audience.

Book Discussion on [A Visionary Nation]

Mr. Karabell talked about his book, [A Visionary Nation: Four Centuries of American Dreams and What Lies Ahead], published by HarperCollins. The book is about the cyclical nature of visions and promises made during America's history in the attempt to make a perfect society. Mr. Karabell suggested that these utopian impulses have at times achieved much, but eventually leave people disappointed from the results, and thereby a new vision is created to replace the old. Mr. Karabell talks about six specific cycles in American history, beginning with the Pilgrims who desired to follow God's will to improve society in the new world. The latest is the new economy vision where people looked to expanding personal wealth and some used the Internet to obtain it. Mr. Karabell suggests that this current era is now receding and that we are on the crest of a new vision, which possibly will be a search for a connectedness with society through community and spirituality. He takes questions at the end of the program.

Mr. Karabell discussed his book [The Last Campaign: How Harry Truman Won the 1948 Election], published by Alfred Knopf. The book details the last election before television changed the process forever. The campaign featured four different candidates that represented the full spectrum of political ideology of the time, with incumbent Harry Truman challenged by Thomas Dewey, Henry Wallace, and Strom Thurman. He details the tactics used by Truman to win the election, that he was widely predicted to lose handily to Republican New York Governor Thomas Dewey, and how those tactics eventually led to problems affecting his next term and America as a whole.
