North to Freedom

Fred Morsell portrayed Frederick Douglass and answered questions from the audience as Douglass might have. He focused on the hypocrisy of a nation which celebrated liberty yet held black people in bondage. After this presentation, scholars assessed the importance of Douglass in the context of the antebellum era and fielded questions from the audience.

Suffragette Statue Unveiling

The Architect of the Capitol held a ceremony to formally unveil the statue of three suffragists, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony. Songs from the suffrage era and patriotic songs were sung by the West Potomac Park (MD) High School Girls Choir. Actors portrayed Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and various speakers talked about the history of the suffrage movement. Ms. Sherr, a biographer of Susan B. Anthony, presided over the ceremonies.
Note: A two minute gap showing a shot of the U.S. Capitol exists in the middle of the program.
