Mr. Dobbs talked about his book [Exporting America: Why Corporate Greed is Shipping American Jobs Overseas], published by Warner Books. In it, Mr. Dobbs writes that there is a large imbalance between the salaries of top CEOs and the salaries of the blue-collar workers and that these same workers are losing their jobs to job outsourcing overseas. Overseas jobs are not subject to the same strict labor laws and federal regulation standards as comparable jobs in the U.S. He also argued that a federally enforced curb on corporate greed could help slow the trend of shipping jobs overseas. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.

Book Discussion on [Talk of the Devil: Encounters With Seven Dictators]

Italian journalist Riccardo Orizio discussed his book [Talk of the Devil: Encounters with Seven Dictators], published by Walker and Company. The book profiles seven infamous leaders whose careers ended in disgrace and who were living in relative obscurity. Based on personal interviews with the subjects and on files Mr. Orizio amassed during his years as a foreign correspondent, the book describes the current lives of the dictators, their perspectives on their former administrations and possible plans for the future. The seven rulers include former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who, according to Mr. Orizio, feels "only nostalgia" for his regime; Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier of Haiti, who mainly laments the loss of his fortune; and the wife of former Yugoslavian leader Slobodan Milosevic, Mira Markovic. Ms. Markovic describes herself and her husband as "old-fashioned sentimentalists." She also points out that the West formerly supported Kosovo, the location of a base of operations for Osama bin Laden. Following his presentation, Mr. Orizio answered questions from members of the audience.

The co-authors talked about their book, [While America Sleeps: Self-Delusion, Military Weakness, and the Threat to Peace Today], published by St. Martin's Press. The father-and-son team argues that the foreign and military policies of the United States today exhibit some ominous parallels to the policies pursued by Britain in the period between the two world wars. More specifically, they criticize recent U.S. policymakers for reducing the size of America's military forces, and for failing to modernize the military by exploiting new technologies. They also argue that an effective policy of deterrence is linked to America's capability of simultaneously fighting two major regional conflicts. After their presentations, the two authors answered questions from members of the audience.
