Vice President Joe Biden was the keynote speaker at the South Carolina Democratic Party's annual Jefferson-Jackson fundraising dinner held in the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. In his remarks he focused on current issues and the political climate in Washington, and argued that Republicans were simply copying the Democratic Party's message to help the middle class.
Others speakers included House Assistant Minority Leader Jim Clyburn (D-SC), former South Carolina Governor and Senator Fritz Hollings (D) and 2014 state gubernatorial Democratic candidate Vincent Sheheen, who ran unsuccessfully against Governor Nikki Haley in 2010. South Carolina had scheduled the first southern presidential primary in 2016.

Dedication of Room in Honor of Gabriel Zimmerman

The Gabriel Zimmerman Meeting Room in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center was dedicated in honor of Gabriel "Gabe" Zimmerman, the legislative aide killed at the January 8, 2011, shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that left then Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) severely injured. Mark Kelly, who spoke for his wife, remarked that Mr. Zimmerman, her community outreach director, ran toward the victims when the gunman opened fire. He was the only legislative staff member ever killed in the line of duty and Speaker Boehner pointed out that the meeting room named in his honor was the first room in the Capitol complex to be dedicated to a staff member.

President Obama and Joe Biden Remarks to National Governors Association

President Obama and Vice President Biden spoke to a bipartisan assemblage of state governors. In his remarks Vice President Biden compared the frustration existing between the Obama administration Congress with frustration governors might feel dealing with split legislatures. President Obama called on House Speaker John Boehner and congressional Republicans to compromise with him to avoid across-the-board sequester cuts which were scheduled to go into effect on March 1.
The governors were in Washington, D.C., to attend the National Governors Association (NGA) 2013 Winter Meeting, an annual meeting in which a bipartisan group of U.S. governors gathers in Washington, D.C. to discuss issues affecting the states.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget taken back in order to cut deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.

2013 Inaugural Ceremony

President Obama addressed the nation following his swearing-in during the public inauguration ceremony for his second term on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. In his remarks he stressed national unity and called on lawmakers cooperate with one another to confront issues such as climate change, job creation, civil rights, and budget issues, saying "We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate." The ceremony also included the musical performances, a poetry reading, the oaths of office for president and vice president.
Because the official inaugural day of January 20 was on a Sunday, the president was officially sworn into office in a private ceremony at the White House the previous day.

Vice President Biden spoke to reporters after having lunch with a group of local residents at the Metro 29 Diner in Arlington, Virginia. He talked about stories they shared with him on how they would be affected if Republican congressional leaders and the White House are unable to agree on extending the middle class tax cuts to avoid the "fiscal cliff." The vice president then reiterated what he said are the White House's "minimum requirements" for a deal to be reached.
"Fiscal cliff" refers to the impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a budget agreement.
