Social Security Payroll Tax Cut Extension

A House-Senate Conference Committee met in an attempt to break the deadlock over a Social Security payroll tax cut extension. In December 2011 Congress passed a two-month payroll tax cut extension. Democrats proposed taxing income earners over $1 million while Republicans wanted the cost to be offset through spending cuts. The extension expires on February 29th. Conferees also discussed differences over unemployment insurance and Medicare.

The Senate Finance Committee held a "mock" markup hearing to debate amendments to free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama. The hearing is referred to as a "mock" markup because, under the Trade Promotion Authority Act, the markup hearing is the only time Congress may offer amendments to bills submitted by a presidential administration. Final versions of these types of bills are only voted on as for or against.

U.S. Economy and Federal Debt

Ben Bernanke made the keynote address at a conference on the U.S. economy and the federal debt ceiling. In his remarks he said that "failing to raise the debt ceiling in a timely way would be self-defeating if the objective is to chart a course toward a better fiscal situation for our nation. History makes clear that failure to put our fiscal house in order will erode the vitality of our economy, reduce the standard of living in the United States, and increase the risk of economic and financial instability."

They discussed how their group differs from the group working with Vice President Biden for the same purpose, as well as tax increases and entitlement cuts.
At the end of this portion of the event, two videos were shown. Each was a budget reduction plan presentation, one produced by the Heritage Foundation and the other by the Roosevelt Campus Network.
