Justice Department Oversight

Attorney General Holder testified at a Justice Department oversight hearing. Much of the hearing focused on national security leaks and the government's "Fast and Furious" operation aimed at arresting members of drug cartels. Committee Republicans said the documents show that senior Justice Department officials knew the operation involved a tactic known as "gun walking," where smugglers moved guns across the border with Mexico. Mr. Holder said the documents contain no reference to gun walking. He also talked about voting rights enforcement and the Justice Department's effort to stop a purge of the voter rolls in Florida.

House Debate on Presidential Campaign Funds

The House of Representatives considered a bill to eliminate the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, which is used to provide funding to presidential candidates in primary and general elections. Candidates who choose to accept this public funding cannot spend above a certain limit in each state. Since the Fund's inception in 1973, every presidential candidate, except for President Obama in 2008, has accepted money from the Fund for the general election.
Taxpayers have the option of diverting $3 from their federal income tax payment to the Fund. Representative Gregg Harper of Mississippi proposed this bill in order to use that diverted tax revenue to reduce the deficit. The bill passed the House by a vote of 235-190.
