Dedication of Room in Honor of Gabriel Zimmerman

The Gabriel Zimmerman Meeting Room in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center was dedicated in honor of Gabriel "Gabe" Zimmerman, the legislative aide killed at the January 8, 2011, shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that left then Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) severely injured. Mark Kelly, who spoke for his wife, remarked that Mr. Zimmerman, her community outreach director, ran toward the victims when the gunman opened fire. He was the only legislative staff member ever killed in the line of duty and Speaker Boehner pointed out that the meeting room named in his honor was the first room in the Capitol complex to be dedicated to a staff member.

House Republicans on the Budget and Congressional Agenda

House Republican leaders spoke to reporters regarding the fiscal year 2014 budget released that day by President Obama. House Speaker John Boehner complimented President Obama for taking incremental steps on entitlement reform in his 2014 budget request, but overall he said, the president had "back tracked" on the issue and that he hoped the president would not hold the reforms "hostage" to bigger tax increases. He responded to questions on topics including gun control legislation.
Due to technical difficulties, a few seconds are missing where Speaker Boehner referred to a plan to balance the budget over the next 10 years.

They said that President Obama and Senate Democrats bear responsibility for the automatic spending cuts. Speaker Boehner stated that the House had already passed two bills to address sequestration, adding, "We should not have to move a third bill before the Senate gets off their ass and begins to do something."
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget cut in order to take back deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.
