Book Discussion on [A Fundamental Freedom]

David Lampo argues in his book that support for gay rights by the political right is in accordance with conservative ideologies of personal freedom and limited government. The author contends that social conservatives that refute this argument are hypocritical, but that rank-and-file Republicans are far more supportive of gay rights than commonly presumed. Mr. Lampo was joined in discussion by Michael Barone. They also responded to questions from members of the audience at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C.
Alexis de Tocqueville and Conservative Concepts

Political analyst Michael Barone talked about the tensions inherent in the American identity and the threat of social dislocation. He examined the writings and observations of the 19th-Century French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville, focusing on Tocqueville's conceptions of liberty, equality, and community. Tocqueville is best known for his two-volume work [Democracy in America], based on his travels around America in the 1830s.
"The Fragility of Ordered Liberty: Tocqueville and Conservative Conceptions of Liberty, Equality, and Community" was the fourth lecture in the Conservative Intellectual Tradition seminar at the Citadel led by Mallory Factor, holder of the Governor John C. West Chair in American Government.

Political Demographic Shifts

Two political scholars debated the changing of U.S. demographics and the shifting the political landscape for 2012. Ruy Teixeira argued that trends would favor Democrats. To back his claim, he cited the growing Hispanic population and the decreasing influence of religion. Michael Barone agreed with Mr. Teixeira, but concluded instead that demographics of the preceding decade would not necessarily continue in the same direction. In one example he referenced lower inflow of Mexican immigrants to U.S. due to economic problems. They also responded to questions from the audience.

Book Discussion on [Let Them In: The Case for Open Borders]

Jason Riley talked about his book [Let Them In: The Case for Open Borders] (Gotham, 2008). In his book Mr. Riley makes the case for welcoming more legal immigrants to the United States. Drawing on history, scholarly studies, and first-hand reporting, he argues that newcomers are fueling America's prosperity and dynamism. He challenges the prevailing views on talk radio and cable TV that immigrants are overpopulating the country, stealing jobs, depressing wages, bankrupting social services, filling prisons, resisting assimilation and promoting big government. Mr. Riley argued that the best way to reduce illegal immigration is to give those who come here to work more ways to legally immigrate. Further, he contends that resources spent on guarding the borders could be reallocated for more effective use on immediate national needs. Michael Barone, author of [The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again], joined him in a discussion moderated by Daniel Griswold. They responded to questions from audience members.

Book Discussion on [FDR's Folly]

Mr. Powell talked about his book, [FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression], published by Crown Forum. In the book, the author criticizes what he refers to as "big government," and works to refute the popular view that President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies pulled America out of the Great Depression. Among Mr. Powell's specific allegations and criticisms: federal taxes tripled; investment was discouraged; hiring was discouraged; federal securities became more difficult to obtain; food was destroyed while people went hungry; prices for all goods and services increased; banking regulations led to bank failures; and public work projects dragged the economy down. He argued further that the depression could have been over by October of 1934 if not for Roosevelt's interference. Following Mr. Powell's remarks, Mr. Barone gave his own opinions about President Roosevelt and The New Deal. Mr. Powell and Mr. Barone then responded to questions from the audience.

Mr. Barone talked about his book [The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again], published by Regnery Publishing. Mr. Barone said he was inspired to write the book because he often heard an idea he disagreed with: that the U.S. is becoming a truly multicultural nation for the first time, and that we should therefore respond differently than we have before. He theorizes that, while the places where immigrants are coming from are different, today's minority groups mirror immigrant groups of 100 years ago; for instance, blacks resemble the Irish, Latinos resemble Italians, and Asians resemble the Jews. He also talked about the successes and failures of blacks, Latinos and Asians assimilating into American society today. He took questions from the audience after his prepared remarks.
