Mr. Smiley in his remarks talked about President Obama's attempts to compromise with Republican lawmakers, saying that the Democratic base "wants to see that he is a fighter, not a compromiser."

      <title>Geithner and Bernanke Testimony on AIG Bonuses</title>
      <description>Secretary Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke testifed about a proposed regulations allowing the federal government to purchase "toxic" financial assets through a public-private venture and expanding the federal government's authority to seize both banks and other financial institutions. They spoke about bonuses paid to American International Group (AIG) and oversight of federal investments in the private financial sector. In their answers to questions from the committee they said that while they were vaguely aware of provisions to pay bonuses, they were not fully aware that some bonuses were destined for employees in the financial products division. They also said that they would explore legal avenues to recoup the bonuses, but cautioned against overreacting too aggressively.</description>

 In his testimony Mr. Liddy acknowledged that the credit-default products at the root of AIG's problems should be formally regulated, most likely by the federal government. He said they should be placed on an exchange and should be standardized in order to increase transparency.</description>

      <description>President Obama spoke to reporters and answered questions about jobs and the economy. He addressed concerns about the European Union debt crisis and called on Congress to pass the jobs bill he submitted to them in September 2011. Responding to one question, he angrily denied that White House officials were the source of national security leaks on alleged terrorist "kill lists" and cyber attacks against Iran's nuclear program. In response to another question on the economy he responded that "the private sector is doing fine," but later clarified the statement saying "it is absolutely clear the economy is not doing fine" and that his point was that private-sector growth had outpaced public-sector growth.</description>

He was chief executive offices of the conservative think tank Hudson Institute and then spent eight years with Eli Lilly and Company, leaving as senior vice president in 2001.</description>
