      <title>Q&amp;A with Jim Gates</title>
      <description>National Medal of Science Laureate Jim Gates talked about the process by which a scientist is nominated and selected for the highest honor the U.S. government bestows upon scientists. He detailed memories from his childhood, and how he developed an interest in science as a young student. He shared the story about a PBS Science Now video he appeared in titled, "30 Second Science." The goal of the video was to explain the fundamentals of the scientific research of string theory in physics in 30 seconds. He told of his continuing dedication to teaching and explained entering his 41st year as a teacher. 
Professor Gates was born in Tampa, Florida, and received a B.S. in physics and mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his Ph. D. in physics from M.I.T. He is the Regents Professor of Physics with the University System of Maryland, and the John S. Toll Professor of Physics and the Director of the University of Maryland's Center for String and Particle Theory.</description>

She described efforts to curb pollution from tar sands oil production, but said that tar sands production would not slow down if the pipeline was not extended to the Gulf of Mexico. After her remarks she was interviewed by Daniel Yergin and responded to questions submitted by members of the audience. She was interrupted by protestors several times.</description>

C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2013 LCV Cities Tour" in Mesa, Arizona, on March 4-7 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Cox Communications local cable affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2.</description>

She said public debate on fracking had primarily been focused on the viewpoints of anti-fracking environmental activists and pro-business interests, so she focused on the more everyday effects of fracking, such as taxation and regulatory concerns, safety, and the impact of fracking on communities and local economies.
This program was part of a "Washington Journal" series highlighting magazine articles. The title of Ms. Margonelli's article is "The Debate We Aren't Having."</description>
