Q&A with Mark Shields

Mark Shields, syndicated columnist and political analyst for PBS, talked about his early days in politics and shared stories of his role as a legislative assistant to Senator William Proxmire (D-WI) and his work on the presidential campaigns of Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) in 1968 and Senator Edmund Muskie (D-ME) in 1972. He talked about the impact the assassination of Robert Kennedy had on his life and his eventual transition into journalism as a columnist for the [Washington Post]. He reflected on the use of humor in his writing and suggested that 2012 was the worst presidential campaign he covered because candidates Obama and Romney both appeared "not to like politics" very much. He says that John McCain's 2000 presidential primary campaign was his favorite because of the candidate's openness and willingness to speak with voters. Mr. Shields also reacted to video clips of from 1983, 1992, and 2012.

Members ruled that Mr. Moore did violate House ethics rules rand would receive a letter of admonishment for his actions.
Prior to the hearing, Representative Waters was cleared of ethics violations charges related to OneUnited, following a two-year investigation. Committee members announced that outside lawyers had determined that Representative Waters acted to represent all minority-owned banks, rather than her husband's specifically.

Lawrence Lessig talked about his latest book about the influence of money on Congress, in which he argued that large amounts of money, fueled by recent changes in campaign finance rules, can secure legislative influence in the U.S. government. He criticized powerful business interests that sponsor corporate lobbyists and suggested that widespread citizen mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention would allow people to regain control of "the corrupted but redeemable representational system." He also talked about clerking for Justice Antonin Scalia at the Supreme Court, and Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court. He offered views on the Obama administration's accomplishments, and the influence his father had upon him while growing up in central Pennsylvania.
Lawrence Lessig earned a B.A. and B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, his M.A. from Cambridge University, and a J.D. from Yale University.

The Library of Congress

C-SPAN's original feature documentary, [The Library of Congress], is a behind-the-scenes look at the national repository, providing the history of the institution, a tour of its iconic Jefferson Building, and glimpses of some of the library's rare book, photo, and map collections. The film also featured some of the presidential papers housed at the Library of Congress, ranging from George Washington through Calvin Coolidge. Viewers learned how the library uses technology to preserve its holdings and expand public access to them, as well as how technology is helping to uncover new information about some of the items in its collections.

He also called on Palestinians to see a future "homeland," rather than Israel, as the place to settle refugees from the 1948 war that founded the Jewish state. At one point in the speech he was interrupted by a heckler in the House Visitors Gallery.

Presidential Health Care Address

President Obama outlined his plan for health care reform before a joint session of Congress. In his remarks he acknowledged the fierce debate that had ensued during the congressional August recess (which he termed a "partisan spectacle"), recognized that health care reform solutions need significant compromise and devotion of resources, and called for legislators to bring their serious ideas to the table and dispense with oppositional nay-saying. He outlined a health care reform solution that included transportable individual health insurance, did not deny coverage to anyone, created affordable options within the marketplace, and he admonished irresponsible businesses and individuals for poor decisions in the provision of health care. He also strongly criticized those who had been irresponsible in talking about health care reform, saying that "demagoguery and distortion" had no place in debate on improvement of heath care, and implored Congress to take up the challenge that President Theodore Roosevelt and subsequent presidents had made to the nation in decades past.
