Professor Brinkley discussed his book, [The Majic Bus: An American Odyssey], the record of a two-month cross-country tour with eleven Hofstra students. The American culture-humanities "class" travelled in a specially-outfitted bus, stopping in Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago and many other cities, visiting historic sites, homes of famous writers, and other culturally important places. The author stressed that the students received college credit for this "travelling seminar" and were expected to read relevant books and were graded on their participation.

Impact of the Discovery Channel on Cable TV

Mr. Hendricks founded the Discovery Channel in June 1985 to provide the first exclusive forum for educational and documentary programming. His channel focuses primarily on: science, technology, history, human adventure, and world exploration. He talked about the potential for future network programming and the role and impact of government regulation of the cable television industry. He said "the cable television industry stands at the threshold of the next revolution in video communications." The revolution will be brought about by wide-spread use of "digital compression" technologies that could bring about up to an eight-fold increase in the number of cable channels available. Mr. Hendricks' speech highlighted the celebrations in April of "National Cable Month."

Public Broadcasting Role in Child Education

The first lady welcomed the presidents of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Public Broadcasting Service, and National Public Radio to the East Room to discuss the role that television plays in the lives of children and, particularly, the role of public broadcasting. Mrs. Clinton explained that about 40 percent of American families do not have access to cable television and that these families contain more than 40 percent of U.S. children. She said that looking at the available channels the 40 percent have access to shows that what is available to children relating to their educational and developmental needs is not usually found on commercial television. It is found during the day on public broadcasting. Following her remarks, the first lady moderated a panel on the role of public television in educating children, with each panelist contributing a different viewpoint.
