President Taft Profile

In the fifth of an eight part series on the Ohio presidents, the life of William Howard Taft, the 27th president who served from 1909 to 1913, was profiled. Historians, scholars and descendants discussed the public and private lives of President Harding. Viewers also participated in the discussion by telephone. During his term, President Taft dissolved the Standard Oil monopoly, and the 16th and 17th amendments, calling for the income tax and the direct election of Senators respectively, were ratified. He was also the only U.S. president who served on the U.S. Supreme Court. He died on March 8, 1930. Mr. Henderson also provided a tour of the home in which President Taft lived from birth through age 18 when he went to Yale University. Highlights of the tour included the parlor piano and a library desk and the first bathtub he had installed in the White House. Robert Taft, II is President Taft's great-grandson.

Book Discussion on [Nellie Taft : The Unconventional First Lady]

Mr. Anthony talked about his book [Nellie Taft: The Unconventional First Lady of the Ragtime Era], published by William Morrow. This is the first biography of Helen Herron Taft, the unconventional wife of the twenty-seventh president of the United States who, in an era before Eleanor Roosevelt, was overt about her power and saw to it that her husband both aspired to, and won, the highest office in the land. The author told the story of the morning of William Howard Taft's inauguration, when Nellie Taft publicly expressed that theirs would be a joint administration by shattering precedent and demanding that she ride alongside her husband down Pennsylvania Avenue, a seat previously held for the outgoing president. He described Nellie Taft as the earliest first lady to do more than stand at her husband's side, saying that she gambled, smoked cigarettes, and served and drank hard liquor. She also fought for women's rights, and privately helped African Americans and immigrants. After his presentation Mr. Anthony answered audience members' questions.
